Many bridges are being restored simply because they are old. And many old structures have one thing in common: lead paint. Bird droppings are naturally corrosive and contain high amounts of ammonia and acid. Removal of bird droppings – or the prevention thereof – has become a concern in some cities, especially since the Minnesota bridge collapse. But bird droppings also carry a host of diseases, particularly when they’ve been dried and turned in to air-borne powder.
