Where do Workers Find Asbestos?

Asbestos is a fibrous material used in the insulation of many buildings. It was mainly used because it is virtually fireproof, and does not conduct heat, electricity or sound. According to the National Cancer Institute, it is also used as a strengthening agent in cement and plastic. It may be found as an insulator among pipes and boilers, and in the shipbuilding industry. Its use is currently limited, though still fairly common. For more information on asbestos, please visit NCI’s asbestos page.

Concerns About Asbestos Poisoning

Asbestos does not technically poison the human body in the same way that lead does. However, it has been shown to lead to lung cancer and mesothelioma. Inhaled asbestos fibers can also cause inflammation and internal scarring.

Inhalation is the most common way for asbestos fibers to enter the body. Asbestos fibers are microscopic and are easily released into the air when asbestos is agitated. This is why construction and demolition projects take precautions before excavating or rebuilding: many older walls contain asbestos insulation that will enter the air if handled improperly.

Decontamination Trailers Protect Against Asbestos

Because asbestos is still a commonly used material, workers may expect to encounter it in many construction and demolition projects, and should take proper precautions not to breathe in asbestos fibers. However, asbestos fibers can also cling to clothing and are just as dangerous as the asbestos on the worksite.

Enviro Outfitters can provide decontamination trailers that will ensure that workers don’t take anything home except themselves. With multiple showers and changing rooms designed to prevent cross-contamination, our trailers are perfect for any worksite that has been dealing with asbestos. We’ll ensure the safety of the worker and the worker’s family. For more information on the technical specifications of our decon trailers, please click here.
